The deputies adopted this Tuesday evening the bill “for the ratification of two protocols to the NATO treaty relating to the accession of Finland and Sweden”, more than five months after the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
The National Assembly approved the accession of Finland and Ukraine to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). 209 deputies voted for and 46 voted against the bill “for the ratification of two protocols to the NATO treaty relating to the accession of Finland and Sweden.”
The presidential majority (Renaissance, Horizons, MoDem) voted for, as did the Republicans, the socialists and the ecologists. On the other hand, the far-left deputies voted against. The 51 deputies of the National Rally present on Tuesday decided to abstain.
Last week, the Senate adopted the text by an overwhelming majority (323 for, 17 against). But parliamentarians, in the Senate as in the National Assembly, denounced the “blackmail” of Turkey, which lifted its veto on the accession of the two Nordic countries in exchange for the extradition of Kurdish opponents.
Sweden and Finland, long-time neutrals, have indicated in recent weeks that they want to join NATO because of the growing threat from Russia, which is waging war in Ukraine. (…)
